A Boy Is Healed

Precious Memories of Mavis Rose Charlton (Mama)

"I remember Mama in a happy way" all the time, not only on Mother's Day. Mama, as she was affectionately called, was a great role model to me, in every way: Emotionally, mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. She was ambitious, caring, comical, compassionate, courageous, enthusiastic, exemplary, fearless, God-fearing, humorous, industrious, kind, loving, neat, and tidy! Time and space could not hold the ways to describe Mama. I will just cherish the wonderful memories of her as long as I live…

Her cooking was superb! Some favourite things that she prepared were: carrot juice, bammy, Christmas cake, curried mutton, fried dumplings, fried or steamed fish, grated corn pudding, rice and peas and chicken, salted fish fritters, steamed callaloo, sweet potato pudding, sorrel drink, soursop juice, you name it... Mama's cooking was the best!

I used to judge other people's meals by her standard. Mama was employed by the General Managers of Alcan Bauxite Company for many years. Several very important people who visited Jamaica, had the privilege of tasting the meals of this unsung heroine. She even cooked for a Miss World celebrity, who visited during that time.

When I was a second year student at Mico Teachers’ College, my mother died. I applied for jobs several places. Finally, I checked at the Alcan Bauxite Company Head Office in Mandeville. The executive secretary asked which of my parents worked at the company. (In those days the jobs were for workers’ children.) When I told her Mavis Charlton, she gave me a well-paying holiday job in the Director’s Office, saying, “Mavis was so good to us. You can start working, immediately.”

My Mother’s good name and reputation made room for me to experience the best summer job that I ever had, and will never forget. Mama not only cooked for CEOs and other executives, she provided food for people who were less fortunate. I learnt from her to care for others and share, where possible.

Special Memories of Aunt Esmie

Aunt Esmie was my closest maternal aunt. She was like a mother to me in many ways and she was approachable, friendly, sociable and trustworthy.

I admired her kindness, love, jokes, outgoing nature, persistence and smiles. Even on her death-bed, as I talked to her via telephone, I could not help but "laugh out loud" as she said some things to me in such comical way.

She was a no nonsense person, who would tell it like it is, no beating around the bush, no time for back biting; she told you to your face, with no strings attached and in love.

Aunt Esmie was a philanthropist. Although she lived in USA for many years, she visited Jamaica, regularly, sometimes twice per year. In my part of the community, she was like Ms Santa Claus, who brought barrels and distributed gifts to several children, youth and adults. She took the time to put the names of people on the items that she bought.

It was fun helping her to sort things for various individuals. (How many people bother to give a pin to anyone less fortunate these days?) She knew how to shop and the department stores welcomed her. She knew how to bake and cook very well and had beautiful flowers and vegetable gardens. She dressed fabulously and was fashionable! At 70 years old, she looked like 40 years old.

Thank God for providing me with Aunt Esmie, who has left an indelible mark that cannot be duplicated. In the sweet by and by we shall meet on that beautiful shore. "To God be the glory for all that He has done" through Aunt Esmie!

Remembering My Dear Brother, Kirk Spencer

Today, I fondly remember my brother, Kirk Spencer, a past student of Hanbury Basic School, Kendal All Age, de Carteret College, Knox Community College and University of Technology, Jamaica.

Kirk was buried on his 30th Birthday, 17 years ago, but he will never be forgotten by his loved ones. I miss him dearly and I remember his kindness, laughter, love, humility, honesty and integrity.

He was born weighing 3 pounds and 2 ounces, so he was placed in an incubator and remained in hospital for a while. In addition, he was severely asthmatic and missed school several times because of illness. Nevertheless, Kirk excelled and became top student in every class, passing Common Entrance at a young age. He was a prefect in High School and represented his school in National School Challenge Quiz, in Fifth Form. His performance confirmed what knowing God enables us to do: "For with God nothing shall be impossible." Luke 1:37, KJV.

May God help us to cherish our families and friends and tell them how we feel about them while they are alive. (I would like to hear how people feel about me while I am alive.) If I have offended anyone in any way, please forgive me. If I have done something good, tell me when I can appreciate it, since deceased people cannot hear.

Remember to make the phone call, now, send a card or email, write a letter or visit your loved ones. Do as God would have you to do to glorify His name and be a blessing to those in need.

Rev Glen Archer is dead

KINGSTON, Jamaica - OBSERVER ONLINE has learnt that Rev Glen Archer is dead.

He reportedly died this morning at hospital having been ailing for some time.

He was 61.

A trained pastor with an honours degree from the Jamaica Theological Seminary, Archer was better known as a teacher at Ardenne, where he joined the staff in 1978.

The outstanding spelling and quiz coach in 1998 coached Jody-Anne Maxwell to a historic victory in the prestigious Scripps Howard Spelling Bee (now the National Spelling Bee) in the United States.

Remembering Rev. Glen Archer

God be with Rev. Archer's family, friends, colleagues and students, at this time of loss.

I knew him personally and I remember how respectful he was to me as a co-worker, when I served as a Guidance Counsellor, at Ardenne High School. We used to talk about his training as a Minister of the Gospel and his passion to coach champion spellers. He even offered to coach my daughter from she was young, but she went to England.

Rev. Archer was a man of God, who was a no-nonsense person. He was courteous, devoted, enthusiastic, friendly, jovial and optimistic! He enjoyed singing and he had a pleasant smile.

I believe that Rev. Archer would say, like the Apostle Paul: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." 2 Timothy 4:7-8 King James Version (KJV)

Giving God Thanks For The Life of Elzbieta Chalecka

Today, I am giving God thanks for the life of Elzbieta Chalecka from Poland. She was a Church sister and supporter of Lunchtime Praise and Worship that I lead at Cambridge Seventh-day Adventist Church, in England.
Elizabeth as she was affectionately called, was a devoted Christian, who knew how to pray. When Elizabeth prayed for me, I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. Last week Wednesday, Elzbieta came to Lunchtime Praise and Worship and noted that she could only stay for 15 minutes, as she was on her way to work. She listened to the Gospel music that was playing on the CD and said that she liked it very much.

She thanked me for opening the Church so that she could come to pray. Elzbieta prayed thanking God for various things. She also prayed for everyone at church, her family, my family, plus aked God for some specific things.

One thing for sure, at Lunchtime Praise and Worship, Elzbieta was very happy in the LORD. I showed her a chart that said
Happy New Year and she laughed! You see, it depicted human beings forming the words for Happy New Year. She said excitedly, "DANCING!"

Elzbieta was a dance teacher and she had a passion to dance and use dancing for the glory of God. She knew that some people questioned her career in dancing, but in talking to her, that was what she believed God called her to do.

Several times we explored ways in which she could glorify God as a dance teacher. She did not compromise her Christian Beliefs and she did not accept jobs that required her to give up her Sabbaths.

I will miss Elzbieta very much. I believe Elzbieta would not want us to mourn as those who have no hope. Elzbieta knew God and accepted Jesus as her personal LORD and Saviour. She knew that at Lunch time Praise and Worship, I usually say we are not alone, as God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are with us.

Those reading this, who have not accepted Christ as LORD and Saviour, please make a decision before it is too late. Those of us who know Him already, let us recommit ourselves to God and surrender all to Him, as we go and share the Gospel to everyone.

Jesus is coming soon... Are we ready for Jesus to come? Please let us live every day as if it is our last day.

Last but not the least, I want to extend my profound sympathy and prayer to Elzbieta's families, friends, co-workers, students and well-wishers. May her soul rest in peace.
